TheCrimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was a polity on theCrimean Peninsula within theUkrainian Soviet Socialist Republic that was formed during the collapse of theSoviet Union and the following year was renamed theRepublic of Crimea. It was later reconstituted as theAutonomous Republic of Crimea.
On 12 February 1991, the status of theCrimean Oblast was changed to that of autonomous republic by theUkrainian SSR as the result of a state-sanctionedreferendum held on 20 January 1991.[1] Four months later, on June 19, appropriate changes were made to the Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR.[2][3]
In September 1991, the Crimean parliament declared the territory to be a sovereign constituent part ofUkraine.[4] Following approval of theUkrainian independence national referendum on 1 December 1991, the region was part of the newly independent state of Ukraine. With effect from 6 May 1992, the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was transformed into theRepublic of Crimea within Ukraine.
The status ofSevastopol, due to its strategic importance as themain base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, remained disputed between Ukraine and Russia until 1997 when it wasagreed that it should be treated as a "city with special status" within Ukraine.
Since 2014, theCrimean Peninsula has been under Russian control following theannexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.
