Crest and trough in a wave

Acrest point on awave is the highest point of the wave. A crest is a point on asurface wave where thedisplacement of the medium is at a maximum. Atrough is the opposite of a crest, so theminimum or lowest point of the wave.

When the crests and troughs of twosine waves of equalamplitude andfrequency intersect or collide, while being inphase with each other, the result is calledconstructiveinterference and the magnitudes double (above and below the line). When inantiphase – 180° out of phase – the result isdestructive interference: the resulting wave is the undisturbed line having zeroamplitude.
