Credible minimum deterrence

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Principle on which Pakistan and India's nuclear doctrines are based

For Pakistan's minimum credible deterrence policy, seeN-deterrence.

Credible minimum deterrence is the principle on whichIndia'snuclear strategy is based.

It underlinesno first use (NFU) with an assuredsecond strike capability and falls underminimal deterrence, as opposed tomutually assured destruction. India's tentative nuclear doctrine[1][2] was announced on August 17, 1999 by the secretary of theNational Security Advisory Board,Brajesh Mishra.

Later, the draft was adopted with some modifications when theNuclear Command Authority was announced on January 4, 2003. A significant modification was the dilution of the NFU principle to include nuclear retaliation to attacks by biological and chemical weapons.
