Coryphospingus is a smallgenus of finch-liketanagers found inSouth America.Coryphospingus was formerly classified in the familyEmberizidae along with thebuntings andAmerican sparrows.
The genusCoryphospingus was introduced in 1851 by the German ornithologistJean Cabanis.[2] Thetype species was designated as thered pileated finch by the English zoologistGeorge Robert Gray in 1855.[3][4] The genus name combines theAncient Greekkoruphē meaning "crown of the head" withspingos meaning "finch".[5] The genus contains two species.[6]
