Corton Denham is a village andparish inSomerset, England, situated seven miles north east ofYeovil in theSouth Somerset district. The village has apopulation of 189.[1]

History

The village was namedCorfetone in theDomesday Book of 1086, coming from theOld English meaningthe settlement in a cutting. The second part of the name comes from the Dynham (later Dynham) family who held the manor from the 12th century until 1509.[2]

The parish was part of thehundred ofHorethorne.[3]

In the 19th century an ironwaterwheel was installed at Whitcombe Farmhouse.[4]

Governance

Theparish council has responsibility for local issues, including setting an annual precept (local rate) to cover the council's operating costs.

The village falls within theNon-metropolitan district ofSouth Somerset, which was formed on 1 April 1974 under theLocal Government Act 1972, having previously been part ofWincanton Rural District.[5] The district council is responsible forlocal planning andbuilding control.

Somerset County Council is responsible for running the largest and most expensive local services such aslocal education, public transport, police, and fire services.

It is also part of theGlastonbury and Somertoncounty constituency represented in theHouse of Commons of theParliament of the United Kingdom. It elects oneMember of Parliament (MP) by thefirst past the post system of election, and was part of theSouth West England constituency of theEuropean Parliament prior toBritain leaving the European Union in January 2020, which elected sevenMEPs using thed'Hondt method ofparty-list proportional representation.
