International football competition

TheCopa Centenario Revolución de Mayo was an internationalfootball tournament, held inArgentina from 29 May to 12 June 1910,[1] and organized by theArgentine Football Association.[2] It was the first international tournament inSouth America where more than two football nations participated.[3] The "Copa Centenario" is considered a predecessor to the South American Championship, later renamed "Copa América".[4]

This contest was held in honor of the100th anniversary of theMay Revolution.[5] Previous to that, the only international competitions in South America had been contested by the national teams ofUruguay andArgentina only. Those competitions includedCopa Newton,Copa Lipton,Copa Premier Honor Argentino, andCopa Premier Honor Uruguayo.

Because of having featured three of the subsequent four founding members of CONMEBOL, the Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo was sometimes called "the first Copa América". However, CONMEBOL recognizes the1916 South American Championship as the first edition of the competition.[6]

The tournament was contested in a round-robin format between the national teams ofArgentina,Chile andUruguay. All three games were played inBuenos Aires, the first inClub Colegiales Stadium[note 1] and the rest inGimnasia y Esgrima Stadium.
