TheSacred Congregation of Rites was acongregation of theRoman Curia, erected on 22 January 1588 byPope Sixtus V byImmensa Aeterni Dei; it was divided into two separate congregations byPope Paul VI on 8 May 1969.
The Congregation was charged with the supervision of theliturgy and the process ofcanonization ofsaints.[1]
As part of the reforms following theSecond Vatican Council,Pope Paul VI's 1969apostolic constitutionSacra Rituum Congregatio [de] divided the congregation into: theCongregation for the Causes of Saints, and theCongregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.[1]
