Comarques Gironines (Catalan pronunciation:[kuˈmar.kəsʒi.ɾuˈni.nəs]; English:Girona counties) or theGirona region[1] is the northeasternmost of the nine regions (vegueries) ofCatalonia. It has an area of 5,558 km² and 761,690 inhabitants as of 2022.[2]
Located by the border withNorthern Catalonia in France, the region includes thecounties ofGironès,Alt Empordà,Baix Empordà,Garrotxa,Pla de l'Estany,Ripollès andSelva. Within Catalonia, it bordersAlt Pirineu to the west,Central Catalonia to the south-west andBarcelona to the south.
Its demarcation is similar to that of the Spanishprovince of Girona, which differs from the vegueria in that it also includes part ofBaixa Cerdanya and the municipalities ofEspinelves,Vidrà andViladrau, which belong toOsona.
The county of Ripollès, along withLluçanès and Osona in Central Catalonia, comprise the natural region and proposed separate vegueria ofAlt Ter.
The region's capital is the city ofGirona.[3]
