Columbia University Press is auniversity press based inNew York City, and affiliated withColumbia University. Founded in 1893, it is currently directed by Jennifer Crewe (2014–present) and publishes titles in thehumanities andsciences, including the fields of literary and cultural studies,history,social work,sociology,religion,film, andinternational studies.[2][3]
Columbia University Press was founded in May 1893.[4] In 1933, the first four volumes of theHistory of the State of New York were published.[5] In the early 1940s, the Press' revenues rose, partially thanks to theEncyclopedia and the government's purchase of 12,500 copies for use by the military.[6]
Columbia University Press is notable for publishing reference works, such asThe Columbia Encyclopedia (1935–present),The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry (online asThe Columbia World of Poetry Online) andThe Columbia Gazetteer of the World (also online) and for publishing music.[7]
The press is the first of all American university presses to publish music.[8] 1998 the Press founded an online-only site,Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO),[9] andColumbia Earthscape (in 2009).[10] Their books have been positively reviewed by several notable outlets, includingCleveland Review of Books.[11][12]
In 2011, Columbia University Press bought UK publisherWallflower Press.[13]
