Colorado City is now aghost town, inClark County, Nevada, located underLake Mohave at the mouth ofEl Dorado Canyon.
Colorado City was amining camp in theColorado Mining District (New Mexico Territory) and asteamboat landing at the mouth of the El Dorado Canyon on theColorado River, for shipments viasteamboats of the Colorado River.[1]: 33, 35 Founded in 1861, Colorado City, was at first located inNew Mexico Territory, until 1863, when it became part ofMohave County ofArizona Territory. In 1867 it became part ofLincoln County in the state ofNevada.
In 1866, Colorado City became the site of two stamp mills, located there for ease of supplying wood to operate its steam driven mechanism. One was the old Colorado Mill brought down the canyon fromEl Dorado City, and refurbished. The other was the new New Era Mill.[2]
The site of Colorado City, and the Colorado River it was adjacent to, was submerged underLake Mohave following the construction of theDavis Dam in 1951. What remains of Colorado City lies offshore from the site ofNelson's Landing.35°42′27″N114°42′42″W / 35.70750°N 114.71167°W /35.70750; -114.71167
