Coill Dubh (Irish pronunciation:[ˌkəil̠ʲˈd̪ˠʊw]; meaning "black wood"),[5] also sometimes known asBlackwood,[1][6] is a village in northernCounty Kildare inIreland. It is located at the junction of theR403 andR408regional roads, about 40 km (25 mi) fromDublin. Developed as aplanned town in the 1950s to accommodateBord na Móna employees working in the area, it was one of thefastest growing urban areas in Ireland between the 2016 and 2022 census,[6] with its population doubling from 746 to 1,476.[2][1]
The village was established in 1952, on thetownland of Blackwood (Coill Dubh orCoill na Cúirte inIrish)[7] just off the R403 betweenProsperous and Timahoe, to accommodate workers on theBord na Mona works supplying a peat fired power station inAllenwood.[8] It replaced earlier temporary workers camps at Killinthomas, Mucklon and Timahoe, with 160 houses and several shops.[9] Developed alongside nearby Cooleragh,[10] it was the only large settlement to have been founded in County Kildare during the 20th century.
Responsibility for the maintenance of a number of housing developments in the village transferred toKildare County Council in 2017.[11] Coill Dubh was classified as a "village" in Kildare County Council's 2023-2029 Development Plan.[12]
The village is home toCoill Dubh GAA club which, as of 2015, had won theKildare Senior Hurling Championship eleven times.[13] The localassociation football (soccer) club, Coill Dubh AFC, was founded in 1978.[14]
