TheClethraceae are a smallfamily offlowering plants in the orderEricales, composed of two genera,Clethra andPurdiaea, with approximately 75 species.[2] They are native to warm temperate to tropical regions ofAsia and theAmericas, with one species also onMadeira.[citation needed]
In the past, most botanists included onlyClethra in the family, but recent research has shownPurdiaea, previously placed in the closely related familyCyrillaceae, is more closely allied toClethra.[3]
