Clayton Beams[1] (born 1 September 1991), is a formerAustralian rules footballer who played for theBrisbane Lions in theAustralian Football League (AFL).
Claye was born on(1991-09-01)1 September 1991 (the younger brother of former Brisbane Lions captain and formerCollingwood premiership playerDayne Beams)[2] and moved with his family fromYarrawonga, Victoria to theGold Coast at the age of two.[3]
He was selected by theBrisbane Lions as a priority Queensland rookie selection (pick 76 overall) in the2009 Rookie Draft fromAFLQ clubLabrador. He had only joined the Labrador team a few months earlier after seeing his brotherDayne perform well forCollingwood in the AFL.[4]
On the back of strong performances in the Lions reserves side throughout 2010 and his selection in the Queensland state side, Beams was officially elevated at the2010 AFL Draft and commenced the2011 AFL season on the Lions senior list.[5]
Beams made his debut againstFremantle in Round 1 atthe Gabba, with 13 disposals. He played five of the first seven games of the season before breaking his foot and did not play for the remainder of the year.[6]
Beams played in the round 1 victory againstMelbourne and was rewarded the round 1 nomination for the2012 AFL Rising Star for taggingBrent Moloney out of the game, whilst still collecting 25 possessions himself.[7] He was the first Lion to be nominated sinceJack Redden in 2010.
In October 2017, Beams was delisted by Brisbane, but was later redrafted as a rookie.
In September 2018, Beams was delisted again by Brisbane.[8]
