Claudio Miranda,ASC (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈklawðjomiˈɾanda]; March 13, 1965) is aChilean-Americancinematographer, best known for his collaborations with directorJoseph Kosinski.
He is also known for theDavid Fincher-directed filmThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), becoming the first film shot entirelydigitally to be nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Cinematography.[1]
In addition for winning his first win on theAng Lee-directed filmLife of Pi (2012), he became the second Chilean-born person to win an Academy Award.
Miranda was born inValparaíso to a Chilean father and a Danish mother.[2][3] His family emigrated to the United States when he was a year old, and he was raised in Southern California.[2][3]
Miranda's entered the film industry in the lighting department. He was a gaffer and lighting technician underDariusz Wolski forThe Crow,Crimson Tide, andThe Fan.[4] During the 2000's he shot numerous commercials and music videos, winning twoBronze Clio Awards.[4]
He started working with David Fincher as agaffer onSeven,The Game andFight Club, before working in additional photography onZodiac.[4][5] He carried on Fincher's previous use of theThomson Viper FilmStream Camera onZodiac when filmingThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button.[1] The latter earned him his firstOscar nomination. He then won an Oscar in 2012, as well as aBAFTA Award, for his work onAng Lee'sLife of Pi.
Recently, he has become known for his collaborations with American directorJoseph Kosinski, acting as cinematographer in all of his movies.
Miranda has citedHarris Savides as an artistic influence.[6]
He has been a member of theAmerican Society of Cinematographers since 2009.[4][7]
Miranda has been married to Kelli Bean since 2009.[8] They are the parents of singerSofia Isella (b. 2005).[9][10][8]
