Claudia Barainsky (born 30 September 1965) is a German operatic soprano. She has performed internationally, and won awards for her roles in contemporary operas such as Bernd Alois Zimmermann'sDie Soldaten and Aribert Reimann'sMedea.
Born in Berlin, Barainsky studied at theHochschule der Künste withIngrid Figur. She took classes withDietrich Fischer-Dieskau andAribert Reimann. At the beginning of her career, she appeared in concerts at festivals such asSommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker,Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, theSchubertiade inFeldkirch, and theWittener Tage für neue Kammermusik. She made her stage debut in 1993 at theStadttheater Bern as Konstanze in Mozart'sDie Entführung aus dem Serail. A year later, she sang there the title role of Alban Berg'sLulu.[1] She appeared in the title role of Aribert Reimann'sMelusine at theSemperoper in Dresden.[2][3]
She performed at theDeutsche Oper am Rhein in 1995 the parts of Sophie inDer Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, Musetta in Puccini'sLa Bohème and Blonde inDie Entführung. She appeared at theBayreuth Festival first in 1998 as a flower maiden inParsifal, and again in 2000 as the Forest Bird (Waldvogel) inSiegfried.[1]
Barainsky participated in the 2000 premiere ofAribert Reimann'sBernarda Albas Haus at theBayerische Staatsoper as Martirio, and performed the same part at theKomische Oper Berlin.[3] In 2001, she appeared as Anna in Heinrich Marschner'sHans Heiling at theDeutsche Oper Berlin. She was awarded thePreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in the category "best singer" in 2007 for her interpretation of Marie in Bernd Alois Zimmermann'sDie Soldaten.[4]
She performed atHandel Festival Karlsruhe [de], and at the opera houses inAmsterdam,Avignon,Brussels andTokyo, among others. In 2009, she appeared at the Semperoper as Badi'at in Henze'sL'Upupa.[5]
She appeared in the title role of Reimann'sMedea at theFrankfurt Opera in the German premiere in September 2010,[3] and was awarded the 2011 German theater prizeDer Faust for her performance.[2] She repeated the role in 2017 at theVienna State Opera, conducted byMichael Boder.[6]
In 2014, she performed the title role ofDaphne by Strauss at theThéâtre du Capitole in Toulouse.[7] She performed at the 2017 premiere ofUri Caine's song cycle on texts fromDes Knaben Wunderhorn, conducted byKristjan Järvi. Composers have written works for her; for example, Aribert Reimann'sTarde for soprano and orchestra in 2003, after a poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez.[3]
She collaborated with conductors such asGerd Albrecht,Herbert Blomstedt,Sylvain Cambreling,Christoph Eschenbach,Michael Gielen,Hartmut Haenchen,Daniel Harding,Zubin Mehta,Ingo Metzmacher,Christian Thielemann andLothar Zagrosek.[2]
She was the soprano soloist in a 2008 recording of Bern Alois Zimmermann'sRequiem für einen jungen Dichter byCybele Records, with the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno, the Slovak Philharmonic Choir,EuropaChorAkademie, Eric Vloeimans Quintet and theHolland Symfonia, conducted byBernhard Kontarsky.[8]
