Acity council (Hebrew:עִירִיָּה,Iriya) is the official designation of a city withinIsrael's system of local government.
City status may be granted by theInterior Minister to a municipality, usually alocal council and whose character isurban, defined as having areaszoned for distinctland use likeresidential,commercial, andindustrial areas.
Citymayors and members of the city councils are elected every five years.[1] In 2021, there were 12Arab city councils in Israel.[2]
