Ciarán Joyce (born 2002) is an Irishhurler. At club level he plays withCastlemartyr, divisional sideImokilly and at inter-county level with theCork senior hurling team.
Born and raised inCastlemartyr,County Cork, Joyce first played hurling to a high standard as a student atMidleton CBS. He progressed through the various age grades before joining the school's senior team in 2018. Joyce's first year as a senior ended with a 2-12 to 0-14 defeat ofSt Flannan's College in the2019 Harty Cup final.[1] He added aDr O'Callaghan Cup medal to his collection in February 2020 after a 3-24 to 1-15 defeat ofSt Francis College in the final.[2] Joyce later studied atMunster Technological University Cork and was added to theirFitzgibbon Cup panel in 2023.[3]
Joyce began his club career at juvenile and underage levels with aCastlemartyr-Dungourney amalgamation known as Kiltha Óg. He won a Cork Premier 2 U14 Championship-League double in 2016, before claiming a Cork Premier 2 MHC title in 2018 after 2-13 to 0-12 defeat ofBandon.[4][5]
Joyce made his first appearance for Castlemartyr's adult team in 3-13 to 2-13 defeat ofSt Finbarr's in August 2020. He ended his debut season with aCork LIHC medal after a 1-20 to 0-11 defeat ofRussell Rovers in thefinal.[6] Joyce added aCork IAHC title to his collection in November 2021 after being namedman of the match in the 1-19 to 0-12 defeat ofSarsfields.[7]
As a member of theImokilly divisional team, Joyce won back-to-backDenis O'Riordan Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.[8][9]
Joyce first appeared on the inter-county scene with Cork as a member of theminor team during their unsuccessfulMunster MHC campaign in 2019.[10] He immediately progressed to Cork'sunder-20 team in 2020. Success in this grade was immediate with Joyce claimingMunster andAll-Ireland U20HC medals in his first year after respective defeats ofTipperary andDublin.[11][12] He claimed a second successive Munster U20HC medal after a two point defeat ofLimerck in 2021.[13] Joyce's last game in the grade saw him claim a second successive winners' medal after a defeat ofGalway in the2021 All-Ireland U20 final.[14]
Joyce had one more year of under-20 hurling, however, his inclusion on thesenior team in December 2021 made him ineligible for the grade.[15][16] He was at left corner-back when Cork lost the2022 National League final toWaterford.[17] Joyce was aGAA/GPA Young Hurler of the Year nominee in November 2023.[18]
