Ciénega (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈsjeneɣa]) is amunicipality in theMárquez Province, part ofBoyacá Department,Colombia. The urban centre of Ciénega is situated on theAltiplano Cundiboyacense at a distance of 27 kilometres (17 mi) from the department capitalTunja at an elevation of 2,460 metres (8,070 ft). The elevation ranges within the municipality from 2,200 metres (7,200 ft) to 3,400 metres (11,200 ft). The municipality bordersViracachá andSoracá in the north,Rondón in the east and south andRamiriquí in the south and west.[1]
The name Ciénega comes fromChibcha and means "Place of water".[2]
The area around Ciénega in the times before theSpanish conquest was part of theMuisca Confederation, a loose confederation of differentrulers of theMuisca. Ciénega was ruled by thezaque based inHunza. On his way to the legendaryEl Dorado,conquistadorGonzalo Jiménez de Quesada passed through Ciénega.
Modern Ciénega was founded on October 22, 1818 by José Cayetano Vasquez, son of the owner of the mainhacienda in the village.[1]
Main economical activities of Ciénega arelivestock farming (66 %) andagriculture (31 %). Among the agricultural products cultivated arepotatoes,maize,peas andarracacha,tree tomato anduchuva.[1]
