Chromium hexafluoride orchromium(VI) fluoride is a hypothetical chemical compound betweenchromium andfluorine with thechemical formulaCrF6. It was previously thought to be an unstable yellow solid decomposing at −100 °C,[2] but this has been shown to be a misidentification ofchromium pentafluoride, CrF5.[3]
CrF6 used to be thought to be produced by exhaustivefluorination of chromium metal at 400 °C (752 °F) and 20 MPa of pressure, and immediate freezing out of the reaction chamber to prevent decomposition:
However, it has been shown thatchromium pentafluoride (CrF5) is formed instead:
and thatCrF6 has yet to be synthesized.
