Christopher Vogler (born 1949) is aHollywooddevelopment executive, screenwriter, author and educator, best known for working with Disney and his screenwriting guide,The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers, from 2007.
Born in Missouri, Vogler studied filmmaking at theUSC School of Cinema-Television.
Vogler has worked forDisney studios,Fox 2000 pictures, andWarner Bros. in the development department. He contributed story material to the Disney animated featureThe Lion King.[1]
He has also taught in theUSC School of Cinema-Television,Division of Animation and Digital Arts as well as atUCLA extension. He is President of the companyStorytech Literary Consulting. It was founded in 1999 and its Vice President,Brad Schreiber, consults on scripts and books, using Vogler's approach.[2]
Vogler was inspired by the writings of mythologistJoseph Campbell, particularlyThe Hero with a Thousand Faces, which detailed theHero's Journey archetype in classicalmythology.[3][4]Vogler used Campbell's work to create a 7-page company memo for Hollywood screenwriters,A Practical Guide to The Hero with a Thousand Faces,[5] which Vogler later developed intoThe Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Storytellers and Screenwriters in 1992, and thenThe Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers (ISBN 978-1-932907-36-0). Vogler has since spun off his techniques into worldwide masterclasses.[6][7][8]
