Christina Maria McHale (born May 11, 1992)[1] is an American professionaltennis player. Her career-highWTA rankings are world No. 24 in singles and No. 35 in doubles.

Known for an aggressive baseline game,[3] McHale was recognized byThe New York Times for her "booming" groundstrokes and fast footwork.[4] She reached the third round of all fourGrand Slam tournaments and represented the United States inFed Cup andOlympic competitions. In September 2016, McHale won her first and only career WTA Tour singles title at theJapan Women's Open.

Early life

Christina is the daughter of John and Margarita McHale. Her father John is anIrish American, while her mother Margarita was born inCuba. She resided New Jersey until she was three years old. Her family lived in Hong Kong from the time she was three until she was eight, and she speaks a degree ofMandarin Chinese, along with fluent Spanish. In 2000, the McHale family returned to the United States. In June 2006, she graduated from Upper School of theEnglewood Cliffs Public Schools as the eighth-grade valedictorian.[5]

For her freshman year of high school, she attended the Academy of Law and Public Safety withinDwight Morrow High School. At the age of 15, she left home to train at the USTA Training Center headquarters inBoca Raton, Florida. She was homeschooled through Kaplan Online High School since age 15. Her sister Lauren played collegiate tennis atUNC-Chapel Hill.

McHale began professional training at the USTA Training Center inCarson, California.[6]

2009

She was granted a wildcard into the main draw of theAustralian Open where she lost a three-set match in the first round toJessica Moore.[7]

In March, McHale played at a 25k tournament in Redding, California, where she was defeated in the first round by seventh seedKimiko Date-Krumm. Playing at theMiami Open, McHale lost in the first round of qualifying toAnastasiya Yakimova.

Competing at a 25k tournament in Szczecin, Poland, McHale advanced to the semifinal round where she was defeated byStephanie Gehrlein. Seeded fourth at a 10k tournament in Alkmaar, she lost in her quarterfinal match to qualifierLaura Pous Tió. Coming through qualifying at theVancouver Open, McHale was defeated in the first round byOlga Puchkova. Playing at theConnecticut Open, she lost in the first round of qualifying toYanina Wickmayer. Entering as a wildcard at theUS Open, McHale won her first match in a major by beatingPolona Hercog in the first round.[8] She was defeated in the second round by 29th seed, former world No. 1 and 2006 champion,Maria Sharapova.[9]

In Canada at the Challenger de Saguenay, McHale lost in the second round toAnastasia Pivovarova. At the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy in Alabama, McHale reached the final where she was defeated by qualifier and compatriot,Alison Riske.[10] Playing in Kansas City at the Pro Tennis Classic, she lost in the second round to second seed and compatriot, Varvara Lepchenko. At the Goldwater Classic in Phoenix, McHale lost in the first round again to Alison Riske. At her final tournament of the season, the Tevlin Challenger in Toronto, she lost in the second round to Alexandra Stevenson.

McHale ended the year ranked world No. 218.

2010

She started season by playing at a 25k tournament in Plantation, Florida. Seeded seventh, she lost her quarterfinal match to top seedMaret Ani. At the 25k tournament in Lutz, Florida, McHale reached the quarterfinal round where she was defeated by qualifierFlorencia Molinero.

Representing the USA in theFed Cup tie versus France, McHale only played one rubber; she lost toPauline Parmentier. The U.S. team ended up winning the tie over France 4–1.[11] Playing a 25k tournament in Surprise, Arizona, McHale made it to the semifinals where she was defeated byAbigail Spears. As a wildcard at theIndian Wells Open, McHale lost in the first round to compatriotVania King.[12] InMiami, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying byKatie O'Brien.

Coming through qualifying at theFamily Circle Cup, McHale lost in the third round to 13th seed and compatriotMelanie Oudin.[13] At theFrench Open, she was defeated in the first round by Varvara Lepchenko.[14]

Playing in Rome at the Italian Open, McHale reached the quarterfinals where she lost to second seedMaria Elena Camerin. Seeded seventh at the Smart Card Open, McHale lost in her quarterfinal match to second seed and eventual championPatricia Mayr-Achleitner. Seeded fourth at the Grapevine Classic, McHale was eliminated in the first round by Julia Glushko.

Getting past the qualifying rounds at theStanford Classic, she lost in the second round to top seedSam Stosur.[15] Competing at theVancouver Open, McHale advanced to the semifinals where she was defeated by sixth seedVirginie Razzano. Receiving a wildcard to play at theWestern & Southern Open, McHale won her first-round match when her opponent, 15th seedNadia Petrova, retired due to heat illness.[16] McHale lost in the third round to fourth seed and eventual championKim Clijsters.[17] InNew Haven, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying bySimona Halep.[18] At theUS Open, McHale lost in the first round to Vania King.[19]

At theChallenge Bell in Quebec City, McHale reached the semifinals where she was defeated by qualifier and eventual championTamira Paszek.[20] Getting through qualifying at thePan Pacific Open, she lost in the first round toFlavia Pennetta. Seeded sixth at the 100k tournament in Tokyo, McHale was defeated in the first round byLaura Robson. Entering theJapan Women's Open as a qualifier, she lost her first-round match to seventh seedIveta Benešová.[21] Seeded second at the 50k tournament in Toronto, she was defeated in the first round byGabriela Dabrowski. Seeded eighth at the 75k tournament in Phoenix, McHale lost in the quarterfinal round toIrina Falconi.

2011

McHale began the season at theBrisbane International. After losing in the final round of qualifying toLucie Hradecká, she entered the main draw as a lucky loser and was defeated in the first round byRoberta Vinci.[citation needed] InSydney, McHale lost in the first round of qualifying toKarolina Šprem. At theAustralian Open, she was defeated in the first round byCarla Suárez Navarro.[22]

At theMidland Tennis Classic, McHale lost in the first round to Anastasia Pivovarova.[23] Playing in Memphis at theCellular South Cup, she was defeated in the first round by seventh seedRenata Voráčová.[24] In Mexico at theMonterrey Open, McHale lost in the second round of qualifying to Jamie Hampton. Playing at theIndian Wells Open, McHale upset 11th seedSvetlana Kuznetsova in the second round, before being defeated in the third by Nadia Petrova.[25] At theMiami Open, McHale lost in the final round of qualifying toJelena Dokic.[26] Seeded fourth at the 25k tournament in Pelham, Alabama, McHale reached the quarterfinal, in which she was defeated byCaroline Garcia.

McHale started her preparation for the French Open at theCharleston Open. She advanced to the quarterfinals with victories over qualifierHeather Watson, eighth seedAlisa Kleybanova, and tenth seedDaniela Hantuchová. She lost in her quarterfinal match to third seed and 2007 championJelena Janković.[27] During theFed Cup tie against Germany, McHale lost both of her rubbers toAndrea Petkovic andSabine Lisicki. Germany ended up winning the tie over the USA 5–0.[28] Getting past qualifying at theItalian Open, McHale was defeated in the second round by second seedFrancesca Schiavone.[29] At theInternationaux de Strasbourg, McHale lost in the final round of qualifying toAhsha Rolle; however, she still entered the main draw as a lucky loser, and was defeated in the first round by qualifier Mirjana Lučić.[30] At theFrench Open, she lost in a first-round thriller to Sara Errani.[31]

Coming through qualifying at theInternazionale di Roma, McHale won the tournament beatingEkaterina Ivanova in the final.

At her first event of the grass-court season, theBirmingham Classic, she was defeated in the second round by seventh seed Sara Errani. In Eastbourne at theEastbourne International, McHale fell in the second round of qualifying toAnabel Medina Garrigues. At theWimbledon Championships, she won her second Grand Slam match by defeating 28th seedEkaterina Makarova in the first round.[32] She lost in the second round to Tamira Paszek.[33]

Starting her preparation for the US Open at theStanford Classic, McHale was defeated in the second round by eighth seedDominika Cibulková.[34] At theSan Diego Open, she reached the quarterfinals where she lost to third seed and eventual championAgnieszka Radwańska.[35] Playing in Cincinnati at theWestern & Southern Open, McHale stunned top seedCaroline Wozniacki in her second-round match.[36] She was defeated in the third round by Nadia Petrova.[37] At theNew Haven Open at Yale, McHale upset sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round.[38] She then lost in her quarterfinal match to top seed and three-time champion Caroline Wozniacki.[39] Competing in New York at theUS Open, McHale beat eighth seedMarion Bartoli in the second round.[40] She was defeated in the third round by 25th seedMaria Kirilenko.[41]

In Tokyo at thePan Pacific Open, McHale lost in the second round to tenth seed Peng Shuai.[42] Sliding past qualifying at theChina Open, she was defeated in the second round by eighth seed Marion Bartoli.[43] McHale competed in her final tournament of the season at theJapan Women's Open. Seeded eighth, she lost in the first round to defending championTamarine Tanasugarn.[44]

2012

Wimbledon, 2012

McHale kicked off her 2012 season at theAuckland Open where she lost in the second round to third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.[45] At theAustralian Open, McHale upset 24th seedLucie Šafářová in the first round.[46] She won her second-round match againstMarina Erakovic,[47] before being defeated by 13th seed Jelena Janković.[48]

In February, McHale played in theFed Cup tie against Belarus. She won both of her matches over Anastasiya Yakimova andDarya Kustova. In the end, the USA defeated Belarus 5–0.[49] At theOpen GdF Suez, McHale reached the second round where she lost to Yanina Wickmayer.[50] Playing in Doha at theQatar Open, McHale reached the quarterfinal where she was defeated by fourth seed Agnieszka Radwańska.[51] Seeded 32nd atIndian Wells, McHale got a bye to the second round, and won her match overElena Vesnina.[52] In the third round, she stunned third seed Petra Kvitová.[53] McHale's run came to an end when she lost in the fourth round to 18th seed Angelique Kerber.[54] McHale wrapped up March by playing at theMiami Open. She was defeated in the second round by 29th seedPetra Cetkovská.[55]

McHale started her clay-court season in Charleston at theFamily Circle Cup. Seeded 11th, she lost in the first round to Aleksandra Wozniak.[56] She was then selected for theFed Cup World Group Tie in Kharkiv, Ukraine. McHale won both of her rubbers overLesia Tsurenko andElina Svitolina.[57][58] The USA went on to defeat Ukraine 5–0.[59] At theMadrid Open, McHale was defeated in the second round by fifth seed Sam Stosur.[60] In Rome at theItalian Open, McHale lost in the second round to second seed, defending champion, and eventual champion Maria Sharapova.[61] At theBrussels Open, she was defeated in the first round by fourth seed Dominika Cibulková.[62] Competing at theFrench Open, McHale won her first two rounds over qualifiers Kiki Bertens andLauren Davis, the lost in the third round to seventh seed and defending championLi Na.[63]

Seeded seventh at theBirmingham Classic, her first grass-court tournament of the year, McHale was defeated in the second round by Elena Vesnina.[64] InEastbourne, McHale upset third seed Caroline Wozniacki in the first round.[65] She lost in the second round toAnastasia Pavlyuchenkova.[66] Seeded 28th at theWimbledon Championships, McHale was defeated in the third round by eighth seed Angelique Kerber.[67]

Seeded fifth at theCarlsbad Open, McHale reached the quarterfinal where she lost to top seed Marion Bartoli.[68] Representing the USA at theSummer Olympics, McHale was defeated in the first round by 11th seedAna Ivanovic.[69]

In Montreal at theRogers Cup, McHale lost in her third-round match to Canadian wildcard Aleksandra Wozniak.[70] At theWestern & Southern Open, McHale retired from her first-round match against Chanelle Scheepers due to gastrointestinal illness.[71] Seeded 21st at theUS Open, she lost in the first round to Kiki Bertens.[72]

In Beijing at theChina Open, McHale was defeated in the first round by 11th seed Ana Ivanovic.[73] McHale played her final tournament of the season atOsaka. Seeded third, she lost in the first round to eventual finalist Chang Kai-chen.[74]

2013

Wimbledon, 2013

McHale started her 2013 season at theAuckland Open. Seeded seventh, she lost in the opening round to Pauline Parmentier.[75] At theSydney International, McHale was defeated in the first round by fourth seed Li Na.[76] McHale's slump continued at theAustralian Open where she fell in the first round toYulia Putintseva.[77]

In Paris at theOpen GdF Suez, McHale recorded her first win of the year by defeating French wildcard Pauline Parmentier in the first round.[78] She lost in the second round to third seed and last year finalist Marion Bartoli.[79] At theQatar Open, McHale suffered a double bagel defeat in the third round to top seed, defending champion, and eventual champion Victoria Azarenka.[80] Playing at theDubai Tennis Championships, she lost in the second round of qualifying toKurumi Nara. At theIndian Wells Open, she was defeated in the second round by 13th seed Maria Kirilenko.[81] At theMiami Open, McHale lost in the second round to 15th seed Roberta Vinci.[82]

McHale began her clay-court season in Charleston at theFamily Circle Cup where she was defeated in the first round by 12th seed Varvara Lepchenko.[83] At theMadrid Open, McHale progressed through the qualifying event before falling in the second round to second seed and eventual finalist Maria Sharapova.[84] Competing in Rome at theItalian Open, McHale defeatedKarin Knapp in the first round;[85] she lost in the second round to seventh seed Sara Errani.[86] Seeded sixth at theInternationaux de Strasbourg, McHale was defeated in the first round by Lauren Davis. At theFrench Open, McHale lost her first-round match toJana Čepelová.[87]

In Eastbourne at theEastbourne International, McHale was defeated in the first round by Yanina Wickmayer. At theWimbledon Championships, she lost in the second round to 15th seed and eventual champion Marion Bartoli.[88]

McHale began her preparation for the US Open at theStanford Classic where she was defeated in the first round by seventh seedUrszula Radwańska.[89] At theWashington Open, McHale lost in the first round to seventh seed, defending champion, and eventual championMagdaléna Rybáriková.[90] At theRogers Cup, McHale was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Julia Glushko. In Ohio at theWestern & Southern Open, she lost in the first round of qualifying toLourdes Domínguez Lino. At theUS Open, McHale won her first two rounds overJulia Görges and Elina Svitolina. In the third round, she faced 13th seed, Ana Ivanovic. After winning the first set, she served for the match at 5–4 up in the second set but was broken, and ultimately lost the match in three sets.[91] Despite the loss, she earned praise for her fighting performance against the former world No. 1.

Playing in Quebec City at theChallenge Bell, she reached the semifinals where she was defeated by sixth seed Marina Erakovic.[92] At theGenerali Ladies Linz, McHale lost in the first round of qualifying toStephanie Vogt. InLuxembourg, McHale was defeated in the second round of qualifying byKatarzyna Piter. McHale's final tournament of the season was at theInternationaux de la Vienne. Seeded sixth, she lost in the first round to Heather Watson.[93]

2014

McHale commenced her 2014 season at theAuckland Open where she lost in the first round toGarbiñe Muguruza.[94] Getting through qualifying at theSydney International, McHale was defeated in the second round by second seed Petra Kvitová.[95] At theAustralian Open, McHale lost in the second round to tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki.[96]

During theFed Cup tie versus Italy, McHale played one rubber; she lost to Karin Knapp. In the end, Italy defeated the USA 3–1.[97] Playing inAcapulco, McHale reached her first WTA Tour final where she was defeated by top seed Dominika Cibulková.[98] At theIndian Wells Open, McHale lost in the first round to qualifierCasey Dellacqua.[99] Competing at theMiami Open, she was defeated in the second round by 24th seedKaia Kanepi.[100]

McHale got her French Open preparation underway at theFamily Circle Cup. She lost in the first round to qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva.[101] At theMadrid Open, she was defeated in the second round by eighth seed and eventual champion Maria Sharapova.[102] Coming through qualifying in Rome at theItalian Open, McHale lost in the third round toZhang Shuai.[103] Playing at theInternationaux de Strasbourg, her final tournament before the French Open, McHale reached the semifinal round where she was defeated by qualifier and eventual finalistSílvia Soler Espinosa. At theFrench Open, McHale lost in the first round to 32nd seed Elena Vesnina.

She started her grass-court season at theBirmingham Classic where she was defeated in the second round by second seed Sam Stosur.[104] InEastbourne, McHale fell in the second round of qualifying to Hsieh Su-wei. At theWimbledon Championships, she lost in the first round to Chanelle Scheepers.[105]

Kicking off her US Open Series at theWashington Open, McHale upset fourth seed and compatriotSloane Stephens in the first round.[106] She was defeated in the second round by Vania King.[107] In Montreal at theRogers Cup, she lost in the final round of qualifying to Kiki Bertens. At theWestern & Southern Open, McHale was defeated in the second round by ninth seed and eventual finalist Ana Ivanovic.[108] Competing in New York at theUS Open, she lost in her second-round match to 16th seed, former world number one, and two-time finalist Victoria Azarenka.[109]

Seeded fourth at the first edition of theHong Kong Open, McHale was defeated in the first round by Francesca Schiavone.[110] At theKorea Open, she reached the semifinal round where she fell to fifth seed and eventual finalist Varvara Lepchenko.[111] At the first edition of theWuhan Open, McHale lost in the first round to tenth seed Jelena Janković.[112] In Beijing at theChina Open, she was defeated in the first round by 14th seed Flavia Pennetta.[113] Seeded seventh at theJapan Women's Open, McHale lost in the first round toLuksika Kumkhum.[114]

In Hobart at theHobart International, she retired from her first-round match against eighth seed Alison Riske due to a right shoulder injury.[115] At theAustralian Open, McHale won her first-round match overStéphanie Foretz in a three-set thriller.[116] She was defeated in the second round by Carina Witthöft.[117]

Beginning her clay-court season at theFamily Circle Cup, McHale lost in the first round to qualifierDanka Kovinić.[118] During theFed Cup tie against Italy, McHale played one rubber; she was defeated by Flavia Pennetta. In the end, Italy won the tie over the USA 3–2.[119] At theMorocco Open, McHale lost in the second round to fourth seed and eventual champion, Elina Svitolina.[120] Coming through qualifying at theMadrid Open, she was defeated in the second round by fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki.[121] Entering the main draw as a qualifier at theItalian Open, McHale reached the quarterfinal round where she lost to fellow qualifierDaria Gavrilova.[122] InStrasbourg, she was defeated in the first round by top seed and compatriotMadison Keys.[123] At theFrench Open, McHale lost in the first round to qualifier Lourdes Domínguez Lino.

McHale started her grass-court season at theNottingham Open where she was defeated in the second round by top seed Agnieszka Radwańska.[124] At theBirmingham Classic, McHale lost in the third round toKateřina Siniaková.[125] Coming through the qualifying rounds atEastbourne, McHale was defeated in the first round by Camila Giorgi.[126] AtWimbledon, she lost in the second round to 18th seed and 2013 finalist Sabine Lisicki.[127]

Beginning her preparation for the US Open at theWashington Open, McHale was defeated in the quarterfinal round by eventual finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.[128] Getting past qualifying inCincinnati, she lost in the first round to Camila Giorgi. McHale fell in the final round of qualifying at theConnecticut Open to Magdaléna Rybáriková. In New York at theUS Open, McHale was defeated in her first-round match by Petra Cetkovská.[129]

Seeded sixth at theJapan Women's Open, McHale reached the semifinal round where she lost to eventual finalist Magda Linette.[130] At theKorea Open, she was defeated in the second round by second seed Anna Karolína Schmiedlová.[131] Playing at theWuhan Open, she lost in the final round of qualifying toMariana Duque Mariño. At theChina Open, McHale was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Lara Arruabarrena. At theHong Kong Open, she retired from her first-round match againstWang Yafan due to a left elbow injury.[132] This tournament ended up being her final tournament of the season.

2016

McHale won her first WTA Tour doubles title withHan Xinyun, defeatingKimberly Birrell/Jarmila Wolfe in the final of theHobart International.[133] As the top seed at the first edition of theTennis Championships of Maui, McHale won the tournament beating compatriot Raveena Kingsley in the final.[134] In theMexican Open, McHale reached the semifinal where she was defeated by Dominika Cibulková.[135] At theMonterrey Open, McHale retired from her second-round match against qualifier Nicole Gibbs due to dizziness.[136] Playing at theIndian Wells Open, McHale stunned fourth seed Garbiñe Muguruza in her second-round match.[137] She lost in the third round to 26th seed Sam Stosur.[138]

McHale began her clay-court season at theCharleston Open and lost in the first round to Lourdes Domínguez Lino.[139] During theFed Cup tie versus Australia, McHale won her only rubber played over Sam Stosur. In the end, the USA defeated Australia 4–0.[140]

In Paris at theFrench Open, she lost in the first round to French wildcardMyrtille Georges.[141] At theWimbledon Championships, in the second round, McHale won the first set and led 2–0 in the third set before being defeated by top seed, defending champion, and eventual champion Serena Williams.[142] Competing at theUS Open, she lost in the second round to seventh seed and previous year's finalist Roberta Vinci.[143]

Seeded seventh at theJapan Women's Open, McHale won her first WTA Tour singles title beating Kateřina Siniaková in the final.[144] Her final tournament of the season was theTianjin Open where she was defeated in the first round byEvgeniya Rodina.[145]

2017

McHale began the year at theBrisbane International. She beat Sara Errani in her first-round match[146] and lost in the second to eventual finalist Alizé Cornet.[147] Qualifying for theSydney International, McHale was defeated in the second round by second seed, 2013 champion, and eventual finalist Agnieszka Radwańska.[148] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round to Kristína Kučová.[149]

Coming through qualifying at theQatar Ladies Open, McHale was defeated in the first round by sixth seed Elena Vesnina.[150] AtDubai, she won her first two rounds over 13th seed Kiki Bertens and Naomi Osaka but lost her third-round match to seventh seed and eventual champion Elina Svitolina.[151] Seeded fifth at theAbierto Mexicano, McHale reached the semifinal where she was defeated by second seed Kristina Mladenovic.[152] In March, McHale competed atIndian Wells and lost in the first round to lucky loser Evgeniya Rodina.[153] Despite taking the first set 6–0, she was defeated in her second-round match at theMiami Open by sixth seed Garbiñe Muguruza.[154] Seeded eighth at theMonterrey Open, she lost in the first round to qualifierTereza Martincová.[155]

She started her grass-court season at theNottingham Open and lost in the second round toMaria Sakkari.[161] AtBirmingham, McHale was defeated in the first round by Coco Vandeweghe.[162] McHale retired from her first-round match atEastbourne against qualifier Duan Yingying.[163] AtWimbledon, she fell in the second round to ninth seed and 2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwańska.[164]

As the top seed at theHungarian Pro Circuit Ladies Open, McHale lost in the first round to eventual finalist Danka Kovinić.

Seeded eighth at theWashington Open, she was defeated in the first round byEugenie Bouchard.[165] At theRogers Cup, McHale lost in the final round of qualifying toKirsten Flipkens.[166] Playing inWestern & Southern Open, McHale was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Petra Martić. After losing in the final round of qualifying at theCincinnati, she made it into the main draw as a lucky loser and lost in the first round to sixth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.[167] Competing in New York at theUS Open, McHale beat 19th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her first-round match.[168] She was defeated in the second round byDaria Kasatkina.[169]

As the defending champion at theJapan Women's Open, McHale made it to the semifinal where she lost to qualifier and eventual champion Zarina Diyas.[170] Seeded eighth at theKorea Open, she was defeated in the first round by qualifier Arantxa Rus.[171] Coming through qualifying at theWuhan Open, McHale lost in the second round to eventual champion Caroline Garcia. She began her 2018 season at theAuckland Open losing in the first round to Taylor Townsend.[176] Playing at theSydney International, McHale retired from her first round of qualifying match against Kateryna Bondarenko. At theAustralian Open, she was defeated in the first round byAliaksandra Sasnovich.[177]

As the top seed at the first edition of theNewport Beach Challenger, McHale lost in the first round to compatriotJamie Loeb.[178] AtDoha, she was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Bernarda Pera.[179] InDubai, she lost in the second round of qualifying to Sam Stosur.[180] At theMexican Open, McHale was defeated in the first round by fifth seed Irina-Camelia Begu.[181] Competing in California at theIndian Wells Open, she lost in the first round to Kateřina Siniaková.[182] At theMiami Open, she was defeated in the third round by third seed Garbiñe Muguruza.[183]

McHale started her season at theBrisbane International where she lost in the final round of qualifying to Australian wildcardDestanee Aiava.[198] At theAustralian Open, she failed to make the main draw since she was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Varvara Lepchenko.[199]

Playing at theNewport Beach Challenger, she fell in the third round to second seedTatjana Maria.[200] At theDow Tennis Classic, she was defeated in her quarterfinal match by fourth seed and eventual finalist, Jessica Pegula.[201] Coming through qualifying at theMexican Open, McHale reached the second round, losing to third seed Donna Vekić.[202] She qualified for theIndian Wells Open beatingFanny Stollár andVera Zvonareva. In the main draw, she defeated 30th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her second-round match.[203] She was upset in the third round by compatriot and former world No. 1, Venus Williams.[204] At theMiami Open, McHale lost in the first round of qualifying toMandy Minella. In Mexico at theMonterrey Open, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Kristína Kučová.

McHale started her clay-court season at theCopa Colsanitas where she lost in the first round to seventh seed Sara Sorribes Tormo.[205] At thePrague Open, McHale was defeated in the first round of qualifying byAnna Kalinskaya. Playing atCagnes-sur-Mer, McHale won the tournament beating third seed Stefanie Vögele in the final.[206] At theEmpire Slovak Open, she made it to the semifinal where she lost toAnna Blinkova. At theFrench Open, she was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Francesca Di Lorenzo.[207]

Despite losing in the final round of qualifying at theRosmalen Championships, she made it into the main draw as a lucky loser but lost in the first round to Polona Hercog. At theMallorca Open, McHale was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Tereza Martincová. She entered theWimbledon Championships also as a lucky loser and lost in the first round to British wildcardHarriet Dart.[208]

McHale began her preparation for the US Open at theWashington Open where she upset seventh seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round.[209] She was defeated in the second round by compatriotCaty McNally.[210] At theCanadian Open, McHale lost in the final round of qualifying toAjla Tomljanović. As the top seed at the first edition of theThoreau Tennis Open, she was defeated in the second round by qualifierOlga Govortsova. At theUS Open, she lost in the second round of qualifying to Peng Shuai.

Seeded 12th at theNew Haven Challenger, McHale was defeated in the third round by seventh seed and eventual champion Anna Blinkova. At theJapan Women's Open, she lost in the second round to second seedVeronika Kudermetova.[211] Coming through qualifying at theWuhan Open, McHale was defeated in the second round by Dayana Yastremska.[212] In Beijing at theChina Open, she beat after qualifying two-time champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round,[213] and lost to 16th seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second.[214] McHale played her final tournament of the season at theTianjin Open and suffered a first-round loss by eighth seed Magda Linette.[215]

2020

McHale kicked off her 2020 season atAuckland where she lost in the second round to top seed and eventual champion, Serena Williams.[216] Entering theHobart International main draw after coming through qualifying, McHale was defeated in the first round by top seed Elise Mertens.[217] At theAustralian Open, she lost in the first round to 13th seed Petra Martić.[218]

Seeded third at theNewport Beach Challenger, McHale reached the quarterfinal where she was defeated by sixth seed and eventual finalist, Stefanie Vögele.[219] At theMexican Open, she lost her quarterfinal match to seventh seed and eventual champion, Heather Watson.[220] Seeded 12th at theIndian Wells Challenger, she was defeated in the second round byBarbara Haas.[221]

2022-2024: Retirement, comeback

McHale announced her retirement from professional tennis, after losing in the first round of qualifying at the2022 US Open.[222]

McHale returned to professional tennis in November 2024.

World TeamTennis

McHale has played three seasons withWorld TeamTennis, making her debut in 2016 with theNew York Empire. She has since played for theWashington Kastles and theSan Diego Aviators in 2019. It was announced she would be joining theSan Diego Aviators during the 2020 WTT season set to begin July 12.[223]

Playing style

An aggressive baseliner, McHale is noted for her powerful forehand groundstrokes, as well as for her speed around the court.[3][4] During her second-round match at Wimbledon in 2016, Eurosport commended McHale for displaying "superb court coverage".[224]The New York Times has noted McHale's "booming" groundstrokes as one of her primary strengths.[4]
