Chivatá is a town and municipality in theCentral Boyacá Province, part of theColombiandepartment ofBoyacá. The urban centre is situated at an altitude of 2,903 metres (9,524 ft) on theAltiplano Cundiboyacense at 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the department capitalTunja. It bordersOicatá,Toca andTuta in the north, Toca andSiachoque in the east, Siachoque andSoracá in the south and Tunja in the west.[1]
The name Chivatá is derived from theChibcha language of theMuisca who inhabited the central highlands of Colombia before theSpanish conquest in the 1530s. It means "Our outside farmfields".[1][2]
Chivatá was ruled by acacique named Chipatá, loyal to thezaque of nearbyHunza before the arrival of the Spanishconquistadores. Modern Chivatá was founded on March 5, 1556.[1]
