TheChiang family (Chinese:蔣中正家族/蔣介石家族) is apolitical family of theRepublic of China withWu Chinese background fromZhejiang province. Members of a prosperous family ofsalt merchants, the Chiang family held senior positions in Chinese politics first on theChinese mainland and then inTaiwanafter 1949.

Members include ChineseNationalist politician, revolutionary and military leaderChiang Kai-shek, who served as theleader of the Republic of China from 1928 to 1975.Chiang Ching-kuo, President of the Republic of China (1978–1988),Chiang Hsiao-yen, Vice Chairman of the Kuomintang (2009–2014), and more.

Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo, who have been presidents of the Republic of China, are often called collectively as “Two Chiangs” (兩蔣).

Origin

The Chiang family ancestral home is in Heqiao (和橋鎮), a town inYixing, Jiangsu, about 38 km (24 mi) southwest of centralWuxi and 10 km (6.2 mi) from the shores ofLake Tai. Eventually the clan settled inXikou, a town inFenghua,Zhejiang, about 30 kilometers (19 mi) west of centralNingbo, where Chiang Kai-shek was born.
