[edit]

Ancient Greek

[edit]

Its value inAncient Greek was an aspiratedvelar stop/kʰ/ (in theWestern Greek alphabet: /ks/).

Koine Greek

[edit]

InKoine Greek and later dialects it became africative ([x]/[ç]) along withΘ andΦ.

Modern Greek

[edit]

InModern Greek, it has two distinct pronunciations: In front ofhigh orfront vowels (/e/ or/i/) it is pronounced as avoiceless palatal fricative[ç], as inGermanich or likesome pronunciations of "h" in English words likehew andhuman. In front oflow orback vowels (/a/,/o/ or/u/) andconsonants, it is pronounced as avoiceless velar fricative ([x]), as in Germanach orSpanishj. This distinction corresponds to the ich-Laut and ach-Laut of German.

Transliteration

[edit]

Chi isromanized as⟨ch⟩ in most systematic transliteration conventions, but sometimes⟨kh⟩ is used.[3] In addition, in Modern Greek, it is often also romanized as⟨h⟩ or⟨x⟩ in informal practice.

Greek numeral

[edit]

In the system ofGreek numerals, it has a value of 600.

Xi

[edit]

In ancient times, somelocal forms of theGreek alphabet used the chi instead ofxi to represent the /ks/ sound. This was borrowed into the earlyLatin language, which led to the use of the letterX for the same sound in Latin, and many modern languages that use theLatin alphabet.

Cyrillic

[edit]

Chi was also included in theCyrillic script as the letterХ, with the phonetic value /x/ or /h/.

International Phonetic Alphabet

[edit]

In theInternational Phonetic Alphabet, ⟨χ⟩ represents avoiceless uvular fricative.

Chiasmus

[edit]

Chi is the basis for the name literarychiastic structure and the name ofchiasmus.

Symbolism

[edit]

InPlato'sTimaeus, it is explained that the two bands that form thesoul of the world cross each other like the letter Χ. Plato's analogy, along with several other examples ofchi as a symbol occur inThomas Browne's discourseThe Garden of Cyrus (1658).

Chi orX is often used to abbreviate the nameChrist, as in the holidayChristmas (Xmas). When fused within a single typeface with the Greek letterrho, it is called theChi Rho and used to represent the person of Jesus Christ.
