Cheracebus is one of threegenera oftiti monkeys. Monkeys in this genus, particularly thetype speciesCheracebus lugens, are sometimes referred to as widow titi monkeys.[1]
Historically, titis were monogeneric, comprising only the genusCallicebusThomas, 1903. Owing to the great diversity found across titi monkey species, a new genus-level taxonomy was recently proposed that recognises three genera within the subfamilyCallicebinae;CheracebusByrne et al., 2016 for the species of thetorquatus group (Widow titis);PlecturocebusByrne et al., 2016 for the Amazonian and Chaco titis of themoloch anddonacophilus groups; andCallicebusThomas, 1903sensu stricto, for species of the Atlantic Forestpersonatus group.[1]
Cheracebus is derived from the Latinchera (from the Greekχηρα) meaning widow andcebus (from the Greekκῆβος) meaning long tailed monkey.[1]
