Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, officiallyPuratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus, is abus terminus located inChennai, India, providing inter-state bustransport services. It is located on theInner Ring Road inKoyambedu and is one of the largest bus terminus by area in India.[1]

History

In the 1990s, inter-city buses from Chennai were operated fromBroadway bus terminus inGeorge Town and from few other locations such asSaidapet.[2] As a part of the first master plan for the development of the city, a new bus terminus was planned on theInner Ring Road inKoyambedu between theSouth Asian Games village and thevegetable market. Construction of the new Chennai mofussil bus terminus started on 6 June 1999 and it was inaugurated on 18 November 2002 for public use byJ. Jayalalithaa, thenChief Minister of Tamil Nadu.[3][4] On 9 October 2018, theGovernment of Tamil Nadu renamed the bus terminus as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus in honour of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran.[5]

Infrastructure and operations

It is spread over an area of 36 acres (150,000 m2) with a built-up area of 17,840 sq ft (1,657 m2). The terminus is operated byChennai Metropolitan Development Authority and has six platforms in three bus fingers with 180 bus bays.[3] In 2005, the terminus was accredited with theISO 9001:2000 quality certification for its quality management.[6][3] It has a parking area for 60 buses and can accommodate 270 buses at any given time.[4] It has a 25,000 sq ft (2,300 m2) parking space for auto rickshaws, cabs and private cars, and 16,000 sq ft (1,500 m2) parking space for two-wheeler.[4] Additional underground parking lots were added in 2010 and 2013.[7][8] Other facilities and amenities includerestaurants, locker rooms, travel offices, shops,supermarkets,ATMs,dorimtories,toilets,drinking water, emergency care centre,pharmacy,internet and access facilities for disabled.[9]

Chennai Metro Rail has anelevated Metro railway station adjacent to the bus terminus, which forms part of theGreen Line.[10][11]
