Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is acentre-statejoint venture that built and operates theChennai Metro. It was established in 2007 and is headquartered inChennai. CMRL is also involved in the planning and implementation of othermetro rail andmonorail projects in Tamil Nadu.
Government of Tamil Nadu approved theChennai Metro project in November 2007. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), aSPV was established in December 2007 as ajoint venture between theGovernment of India andGovernment of Tamil Nadu, and is headquartered inChennai.[4][5] In June 2015, commercial operations of the Chennai metro started and the first phase was completed by February 2019.[6][7] Since 2019, CMRL is involved in the construction of the second phase of the Chennai metro.[8][9]
CMRL is headquartered at MetroS building inAnna Salai,Nandanam.[10][11] The company is headed by a board consisting of 12 directors, five nominated by Government of India including thechairman, five nominated by Government of Tamil Nadu including theManaging director and two full time operational directors.[2][4] The main operational control center (OCC) is located inKoyambedu where the movement of trains and real-timeCCTV footage obtained is monitored.[12] As of 2024[update], CMRL operates twocolour-coded lines covering a length of 54.1 km (33.6 mi).[13][14] Chennai Metro maintains depots at Koyambedu andWimco Nagar, which house maintenance workshops, stabling lines, test tracks and washing plant for the trains.[15][16][17]
CMRL developed theKathipara Urban Square as a multi-modal transport hub with parking and recreational areas.[23] In 2023, it proposed the development ofCentral Square around its headquarters with commercial complexes and multi-storied buildings.[24] In April 2025, CMRL announced that it has identified public spaces inAdyar andVelachery which would be transformed into public utility spaces similar to the Kathipara Urban Square.[25] In August 2025, it launched a beautification project covering Chennai’sBroken Bridge and nearby areas. The proposed plan also included developing the areas beneath theIndira Nagar MRTS station and the rail over bridge nearVelachery railway station into public utility spaces.[26]
