TheChennai Bypass Road is a full-access controlledexpressway that interconnects four radialIndian National Highways aroundChennai, India covering a distance of 32 km (20 mi) fromPerungalathur (near Tambaram) onNH-32 topuzhal onNH-16 viaMaduravoyal at a cost of₹ 4.05 billion. Constructed as part of theNational Highway Development Project to decongest the city of transiting vehicles, the expressway interconnectsNH-32,NH-48,NH-716 andNH-16. This expressway now forms a part of thecircular transportation corridor.
The first phase is a 19 km (12 mi) six-lane fully access controlled carriageway fromPerungalathur on theGrand Southern Trunk Road (NH 32) to Maduravoyal which lies on theChennai–Bengaluru NH-48. A 3-tier trumpet interchange has also been constructed at the starting point atIrumbuliyur. It was inaugurated in April 2008. The road runs throughThiruneermalai,Pammal,Anakaputhur, Tharapakkam,Kovur,Porur,Vanagaram to reachMaduravoyal.
The second phase include extending the bypass by 13 km (8.1 mi) from Maduravoyal to Puzhal on the Chennai–KolkataNH16 and four-laning it. It also includes two interchanges. There are a clover-leaf grade separator atMaduravoyal Junction and a trumpet interchange at Puzhal where the bypass phase II ends.
A 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) elevated six-lane corridor forms the part of Phase II being executed currently.[when?] This elevated road cuts through the industrial estate inAmbattur. This corridor ends with a road over bridge (RoB) crossing theChennai–Jolarpet railway line. The elevated corridor was completed in June 2009 at a cost of₹ 1000 million.
