TheChaush orChaus are a community ofHadhramiArab descent found in theDeccan region of India.[1][failed verification][2]
The Chaush or Chaus were brought from Yemen to work in the formerHyderabad State as military men for theNizams. It is said that especially when it came to safe guarding his family, the7th Nizam had absolute trust on these Arab Soldiers.[3] They are most concentrated inMarathwada,Telangana andHyderabad-Karnataka regions, and most of their population is concentrated in the neighbourhoods ofBarkas inHyderabad,Shasha Mahallah inKarimnagar, Al-Tamash inAurangabad. They also live inAdilabad,Asifabad,Kagaznagar,Nizamabad,Mahabubnagar andWarangal.[3][failed verification]
The Hyderabadihaleem,marag (mutton stew),murtabaq,shorba,harira,mandi,kabsa,maqluba,tas kabab,lukhmi,sheer khurma,qubani ka meetha andmalida have been introduced in Hyderabad by the Chaush or Arabs.[4][5]
