Chaul is a village in theAlibagtaluka of theRaigad district inMaharashtra, India. It was a town ofPortuguese India, with theKorlai Fort located nearby.


The town was famous forcotton manufactured goods in the 15th and 16th century, According toVarthema, Chaul was producing a lot of cotton stuffs. Even Portuguese explorer and writerDuarte Barbosa conceded fame of the Chaul for cotton materials.[2]
