Charlotte Frances Riley (born 29 December 1981) is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Sarah Hurst inEasy Virtue (2008) and asCatherine Earnshaw inITV's adaptation ofWuthering Heights (2009).[1]
Riley was born inGrindon, County Durham.[2] She was brought up in County Durham and attendedTeesside High School from the age of 9 until 18.[3] She attendedSt Cuthbert's Society, Durham, from 2000 to 2003, performing with the sketch comedy group the Durham Revue[4] and in plays and musicals and graduating with a degree in English and Linguistics; she also attended theLondon Academy of Music and Dramatic Art from 2005 to 2007.[5]
In 2004, Riley won theSunday Times' Playwriting Award forShaking Cecilia, which she co-wrote with Tiffany Wood.[6][7] In 2011, she played Anna inHelen Edmundson's adaptation ofAnna of the Five Towns onBBC Radio 4.[8] She appeared inEdge of Tomorrow, starringTom Cruise andEmily Blunt. She also appeared onstage at theRoyal Court Theatre production ofThe Priory, byMichael Wynne.[9] She co-starred inLondon Has Fallen, the sequel to the 2013 filmOlympus Has Fallen,[10] where she portrayed anMI6 agent Jacqueline Marshall.[11] She also portrayed Arabella Strange in the mini-series adaptation ofJonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.[12] In 2018, she got a lead role in theBBC dramaPress,[13] which was cancelled after its first series. In 2019, Riley played the role of Lottie / Ghost of Christmas Present in the BBC mini-seriesA Christmas Carol, based on theCharles Dickensnovella of the same name.[14] She appeared in theAmazon Prime Video seriesThe Peripheral.[15]
In 2008, Riley andTom Hardy met while playing fictional lovers Cathy and Heathcliff on the set ofWuthering Heights. In an interview Hardy said that although they became good friends while filmingWuthering Heights andThe Take, they only began a relationship after filming the movieWarrior in 2009. Around the summer of 2010, Hardy proposed to Riley. Hardy and Riley have two children together and Riley is step-mother to Hardy's eldest son from a previous relationship. They had their first son in October 2015, and another in December 2018.[16]
