Charlotte Hornets draft history

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hornets selectedKemba Walker with the 9th overall pick of the2011 NBA draft.

The originalCharlotte Hornets of theNational Basketball Association (NBA) were established in 1988 as anexpansion team, based inCharlotte, North Carolina. The team's roster was filled withunprotected players at the1988 NBA expansion draft,[a] and five days later the Hornets made their first picks out of college players at the1988 NBA draft. The Hornets remained in Charlotte for 14 seasons before relocating toNew Orleans in 2002.[1] Two years after the Hornets' departure, theCharlotte Bobcats were established in 2004.[2] The Bobcats first participated in the2004 NBA draft, two days after theirexpansion draft was held.[3] The franchise's name was changed back to the Hornets at the conclusion of the2013–14 season, one year after the team in Louisiana renamed itself theNew Orleans Pelicans. The history and records of the original Charlotte Hornets were conveyed to the newly named Charlotte Hornets.[4]

In 1989, the NBA agreed with theNational Basketball Players Association to reduce drafts to two rounds, an arrangement that has remained the same up the present time.[5] Before each draft, anNBA draft lottery determines the first round selection order for the teams that missed theplayoffs during the prior season.[5] Teams can also trade their picks, which means that in some drafts, teams may have more or less than two draft picks, although they must have at least one first-round pick every other year.[6]

The first pick in the Hornets' history wasRex Chapman, ashooting guard from theUniversity of Kentucky.[7] The Hornets had three top-four picks and all of them have participated in theNBA All-Star Game:Larry Johnson,Alonzo Mourning, andBaron Davis.[8][9] In1996, the Hornets draftedKobe Bryant 13th overall, but traded him forVlade Divac. Bryant finished his career as anMVP, a four-timeAll-star game MVP, a two-timeFinals MVP, an eleven-timeall-NBA first team, and a five-timeNBA Champion.[10][11] The first player picked by the Bobcats,Emeka Okafor, was named the2004–05Rookie of the Year and voted to theNBA All-Rookie First Team.[12][13]
