Charlie Vickers is an Australian actor. He playsSauron in theAmazon Prime fantasy seriesThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Early life and education

Charlie Vickers was born inSt Kilda,Melbourne, Australia. He grew up inGeelong.[1]

He studied for an arts degree atRMIT University in Melbourne and took part in amateur theatre, including performing in Queen's College MADS productions as the Judge inStephen Sondheim'sSweeney Todd andBasil Fawlty inFawlty Towers,[2] before undertaking an audition inSydney for a UK-based drama school.[1]

Vickers moved toLondon, England,[3] to attend theRoyal Central School of Speech and Drama,[4] where he met his wife, actress Georgie Oulton. He graduated in 2018.[1]

Career

Vickers played the youngest son of thePazzi family in eight episodes of theNetflix television seriesMedici. He starred inRachel Ward's comedy-drama filmPalm Beach,[5] alongsideSam Neill,Matilda Brown,Greta Scacchi andRichard E. Grant.

In 2019, Vickers was cast in the main role ofSauron[6] in theJ. R. R. Tolkien-based Amazon television seriesThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,[4] first appearing in episode 2 as his human disguise Halbrand.[3] Vickers has said he was unaware he was playing Sauron until filming the third episode.[6] To immerse himself in the part, Vickers went hiking for five days in theTongariro National Park,New Zealand.[3] To perform the underwater scenes, Vickers took upfreediving.[7] Vickers is a keen runner, having completed several triathlons and regularly done 5–10 km (3.1–6.2 mi) runs several times a week.[7]

In 2023, Vickers starred in a miniseries adaptation of theHolly Ringland novel,The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart[3] as Clem Hart.

Vickers stars in the 2025Netflix miniseries adaptation ofJane Harper'snovel,The Survivors.[8]

Vickers stars withCarryl Thomas in the thriller filmDeath in Shoreditch, which is as of June 2025[update] still in post-production.[9]
