Charles Patrick Pierce[2] (born December 28, 1953) is an Americansportswriter,political blogger,liberal pundit,[3] author, andgame show panelist.[4]

Biography

Pierce was born inWorcester, Massachusetts.[1] He graduated fromSt. John's High School inShrewsbury, Massachusetts,[5] and fromMarquette University in Journalism ('75).[6][1] He attended graduate school atBoston College for two days.[1]

Pierce's first job was as aforest ranger for theCommonwealth of Massachusetts.[7] He wrote forWorcester Magazine in the 1970s, where he covered theBlizzard of 1978.[8] In the 1980s and '90, he was a staff reporter for theBoston Phoenix and, later, a sports columnist for theBoston Herald.[6]

Pierce is currently the leadpolitical blogger forEsquire, a position he has held since September 2011.[9] He also wrote forESPN'sGrantland.[10][11] He has also written forThe New York Times, theLos Angeles Times, theChicago Tribune, theBoston Globe Sunday magazine, theMilwaukee Journal-Sentinel,Sports Illustrated,The National Sports Daily,GQ, and thee-zineSlate as well as theMedia Matters blog Altercation, hosted by historian/punditEric Alterman.

Pierce makes appearances on radio as a regular contributor toNPR programsOnly A Game andWait Wait...Don't Tell Me!. Recently Pierce has begun making weekly appearances on theStephanie Miller Show. He represented theGlobe on several occasions onESPN'sAround the Horn and often co-hosts withBob Ryan onNESN'sGlobe 10.0.

Pierce was a 1996National Magazine Award finalist for his piece onAlzheimer's disease, "In the Country of My Disease."[1] He was awarded third place in thePro Basketball Writers Association Dan S. Blumenthal Memorial Writing Contest.[1]

Controversy

In December 2024, in an article defending the pardon ofHunter Biden, Pierce incorrectly claimed thatNeil Bush had been pardoned by his father,George H. W. Bush. The article was later corrected and then retracted.[12][13][14]
