Charles de Brimeu (1524 or 1525 – 1572 inZwolle) was the last count ofMeghem, lord ofHumbercourt, ofHoudain andÉperlecques. He was grandson ofGuy of Brimeu, who was beheaded in Ghent. He became the last ceremonialHereditary Marshal of Brabant of his family: he sold this ceremonial office toGaspard II Schetz.
During his career he becamestadtholder ofGelderland (from 1556) andOrder of the Golden Fleece. He opposed the centralizing policy ofPhilip II of Spain.[1]During theDutch Revolt, however, he remained loyal to the crown of Spain, and in June 1568 defendedGroningen successfully againstLouis of Nassau.[2] Dying without direct descendants, his titles passed on to his nieceMarie of Brimeu (born in 1550 – died in Liege on 18 April 1605), wife ofLancelot of Berlaymont then (from 1580) ofCharles III de Croÿ[citation needed]. Marie, a convincedCalvinist, had a decisive influence on her second husband, until their separation in 1584[citation needed].
