Charles Randolph (born February 28, 1963) is an Americanscreenwriter and producer forfilm andtelevision. In 2015, he won theAcademy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay along withAdam McKay for co-writingThe Big Short. In 2019, he wrote and produced the filmBombshell, which was directed byJay Roach and starred Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Nicole Kidman.
Randolph was born inNashville, Tennessee. After graduating fromYale Divinity School,[1] he worked as acultural studies andphilosophy professor at various universities inVienna,Austria (includingWebster Vienna Private University[2]) in the 1990s.[3]
In 1997, Randolph spent a weekend giving lectures at theUniversity of Southern California. From a chance meeting with someone who worked for theFarrelly brothers, Randolph was inspired to attempt screenwriting.[3]
Randolph has written screenplays for several films and TV movies includingThe Life of David Gale (2003),The Interpreter (2005),Love & Other Drugs (2010) andThe Big Short (2015).
In 2016, Randolph received theWriters Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, theCritic’s Choice Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, theEmpire Award for Best Screenplay, and theBAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and theAcademy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay for co-writing The Big Short withAdam McKay. He was additionally nominated for theGolden Globe Award for Best Screenplay.[4] Randolph invested nearly a year adaptingThe Big Short; three months for an initial draft and another three months to reduce the complexity.[5]
Randolph is married to Israeli actressMili Avital, with whom he has two children.
