Charles O'Connor Hennessy (September 11, 1860 – 1936) was an AmericanDemocratic Party politician who served as a member of both theNew Jersey General Assembly and theNew Jersey Senate.[1][2] In 1916 he ran unsuccessfully forGovernor of New Jersey.[3][4] He played a major role in the growth ofHaworth, New Jersey, where he founded theHaworth Country Club.[5] He was chairman of theFranklin Society for Building and Savings.[1][2] He was a dedicated advocate ofGeorgism.
He was born on September 11, 1860, inWaterford, Ireland and had a brotherJohn Aloysius Hennessy. He migrated from Ireland toBrooklyn,New York and then toBergen County, New Jersey, where he lived inHaworth.[4] In 1916 he ran unsuccessfully forGovernor of New Jersey.[3]
He served a single two-year term in theNew Jersey General Assembly before being elected to theNew Jersey Senate. Having introduced the legislation, Hennessy helped see passage of proposals to stage a convention to amend theConstitution of New Jersey, and approval of bills to approve anincome tax in the United States and the direct election of members of theUnited States Senate.[5]
He died on October 19, 1936, at age 76 inHaworth, New Jersey.[1]
