Driver profile
Qualifying pace As a driver, you always have the confidence you are the fastest and I do have that whenever I go for a qualifying lap.
It's all about that mindset and putting that lap together in qualifying when it is needed and the pressure is super-high. This is an exercise I have always loved.
I've always said I drive a lot with intuition, I work a lot, of course. But that is where one of my strengths is—that I feel things very, very quickly.
—Leclerc, asked byBBC Sport whether he was the fastest qualifier in Formula One in2024 [ 454] Leclerc has a strong qualifying history in Formula One, where he holds the record formost pole positions without a World Drivers' Championship (27).[ 455] He also holds the record in eitherFIA Formula 2 or its predecessorGP2 for the mostpole positions in a season (8).[ 118] His driving style tends to favour a car withoversteer , allowing for precise micro-corrections and high cornering speeds, which has aided his qualifying pace.[ 456] He became the youngest recipient of theFIA Pole Trophy in2019 for achieving the most pole positions,[ 232] a feat he repeated in2022 .[ 348] Critics have noted his ability to outperform his machinery in qualifying conditions, which has frequently led to his one-lap pace relatively surpassing his race pace and apole–win conversion rate of 18.5%.[ 457] [ 458] Andrew Benson ofBBC Sport described his pole lap at the2019 Singapore Grand Prix as "one of the qualifying performances of the season".[ 459] A study byAmazon Web Services in 2020 listed Leclerc as the seventh-fastest Formula One driver of all time.[ 460]
