Charalá is a town and municipality in the south of thedepartment ofSantander in northeasternColombia. Itsantipode is located within the capital ofIndonesia,Jakarta.[2]
The municipality borders the municipalitiesEncino andCoromoro in the east,Oiba,Confines andSuaita in the west,Páramo,Ocamonte andMogotes in the north and in the southGámbita andDuitama, the latter in the department ofBoyacá.[3]
Charalá has atropical rainforest climate (Köppen:Af) with consistent temperatures, cool nights, and abundant rainfall.

The name Charalá isChibcha, the language of theMuisca and was given to honour the Guanecacique of the village; "Chalala".[3]
Before the arrival of the Spanish in the area, the Santander department was inhabited by theGuane. Charalá was located at the border of Guane territory and theMuisca Confederation of which it formed an independent unity.
Modern Charalá was founded by one of theconquistadors who was part in theSpanish conquest of the Muisca;Martín Galeano, on July 23, 1540.[3]
Main economical activities in the municipality are agriculture (coffee,sugar cane andmaize) andmarble mining.[3]
