Chakraborty (spelling variations includeChakraborti,Chakrabarti,Chakravarty,Chakravarti,Chakrabartty andChakrabarty) is a surname used byBengali Hindus andAssamese Hindus ofIndia andBangladesh, as well as by some communities ofsouthern India. It literally means 'wheels rolling'; metaphorically it denotes a ruler whose chariot wheels roll everywhere without obstruction (čakra 'wheel' +vart- 'to roll').[1] The surname is mainly used by people of theBengali Brahmin[2][3][4] andAssamese Brahmin[5][6] communities in the states ofWest Bengal,Tripura andAssam. The surname is also used by theJains of southern India.[7]
