Chemical compound

Cetostearyl alcohol,cetearyl alcohol orcetylstearyl alcohol[1] is a mixture offatty alcohols, consisting predominantly ofcetyl (16 C) andstearyl alcohols (18 C) and is classified as afatty alcohol. It is used as anemulsionstabilizer,opacifying agent, andfoam boostingsurfactant, as well as anaqueous and nonaqueousviscosity-increasing agent. It imparts anemollient feel to theskin and can be used in water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, andanhydrousformulations. It is commonly used in hair conditioners and other hair products.[2]

5% cetyl stearyl alcohol in petrolatum is cytotoxic per theMTT assay.[citation needed]
