Cephalopholis is a genus of marineray-finned fish,groupers from thesubfamilyEpinephelinae in thefamilySerranidae, which also includes theanthias and sea basses. Many of the species have the word "hind" as part of their common name inEnglish.[3]

Recent molecular analyses have challenged the placement of theredmouth grouper in the genusAethaloperca, in a study based on five different genes this species fell within theCephalopholis clade, thus suggesting that the species should be included in this genus and referred to asCephalopholis rogaa.[4]
