TheCentral European University Press, commonly known as theCEU Press,[1] abbreviated asCEUP,[2][3] is anacademic publisher with close connections to theCentral European University. It is located inBudapest andNew York City.[4]
The CEU Press was established in 1993, following the establishment of the Central European University in 1991.[4] Its language of publication is English.[3] As of 2024, the CEU Press has 470 books available onJSTOR.[4]
The main topics of the CEU Press includepolitical philosophy,open society,history,jurisprudence,nationalism studies,human rights,conflict resolution,gender studies,Jewish studies,economics,medieval studies,literature, andinternational relations.[4][5][6][7]
Originally, the regional focus of the CEU Press was theCentral and Eastern Europe. Later, it expanded to theformer Soviet Union countries and their neighbors, as well as theArab andIslamic worlds.[4] The CEU Press publishes theCEU Review of Books.[8]
Since 2020,Frances Pinter has been the executive chair of the Press in Budapest, Hungary.[1] Emily Poznanski took over as head of CEU Press in February 2021.[9]
In 2020, the CEU Press announced that it is transitioning to anopen access monograph programme through its new library subscription membership initiative, Opening the Future.[10][11] In 2022, CEU Press announced that nineUniversity of California campuses have signed up through theCalifornia Digital Library to their Opening the Future collective funding programs and would receive unlimited, perpetual access to curated selections of the CEU Press' backlists.[12]
The CEU Press is a member of theAssociation of European University Presses[13] andAssociation of University Presses.[14] It is working with theCommunity-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs project.[2]
