Town of ancient Caria

Cedreae orKedreai (Ancient Greek:Κεδρεαί), also known asCedreiae orKedreiai (Κεδρειαί), was a city ofancient Caria, mentioned byStephanus of Byzantium[1]Lysander took the place, it being in alliance with theAthenians.[2] The inhabitants weremixobarbaroi (μιξοβάρβαροι), a mixture of Greeks andbarbarians.[2] It was a member of theDelian League since it appears in tribute records ofAthens between the years 454/3 and 415/4 BCE.[3] At some point during the Hellenistic era, it became part of theRhodian Peraea and emerged as one of the keyRhodian demes.[4]

Near the summit was a Doric temple, likely dedicated toApollo, though only its foundations remain. It was built on a terraced platform supported by a solid wall. Later, the site was used for a Christian church.[4]

Archaeological findings include a theater and an agora. On the mainland opposite the island is a sizable necropolis featuring constructed tombs andsarcophagi.[4]

Its site is located nearŞehir Adaları,Muğla Province,Turkey.[5][6]
