Cecilia Garcia-Penalosa

Spanish economist

Cecilia García-Peñalosa is a Spanish economist and professor of economics at theAix-Marseille University.[1] She is also associated to theInstitute for Fiscal Studies,[2] has an affiliation with theBank of France.,[3] and is visiting professor at the Department of Social Policy of theLondon School of Economics.[4] She was an associate editor of theEuropean Economic Review and is currently an associate editor at theJournal of Economic Inequality.[5] and theJournal of Economic Growth.[6]

She holds the chair on "Gender, growth and development" at theSchool for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in France.[7] From 2012 to 2016, she was a member of the Council of Economics Advisors who advises thePrime Minister of France.,[8][9] and in 2025 she became the president of theSociety for the Study of Economic Inequality.[10]

In 2009, she won the Aldi Hagenaars Memorial Award[11] and in 2025 she was awarded the silver medal by theFrench National Centre for Scientific Research.[12]

Education and career

She obtained herD.Phil fromNuffield College, Oxford after a master's degree atCorpus Christi College, Oxford. She holds a bachelor in Economics from theUniversity of Cambridge, where she was atNew Hall College.[13] She has held visiting positions at theFree University of Amsterdam,European University Institute in Florence,University of Washington,University of Geneva andLudwig Maximilian University of Munich.

Research

Her research focuses oneconomic growth,income inequality andgender inequality.[14] She has published papers in theJournal of Economic Literature,[15] theJournal of Development Economics,[16] theJournal of Public Economics,[17] theJournal of Economic Growth,[18] and theEconomic Journal.[19]

She is an expert on the relationship between income inequality and economic growth, and in 1999 published a paper in theJournal of Economic Literature summarizing the main literature on the topic.[39]
