Hungarian Catholics, like elsewhere, are part of the worldwideCatholic Church under the spiritual leadership of thePope inRome. In addition, there is a Latinterritorial abbey atPannonhalma and a separatesui jurisparticular Church for those who adhere to theByzantine Rite, which is known as theHungarian Greek Catholic Church.
According to a 2019 survey byEurobarometer, 62% of Hungarians consider themselves Catholics.
Caritas Hungary is the social and humanitarian relief arm of the Church.
CardinalPéter Erdő was seen as a leading candidate in the2025 papal conclave.[2][3] He gained significant support and was the favored choice of conservative Catholic networks in theUnited States,[4] Erdő participated in thepapal conclave 2005 and thepapal conclave 2013, which electedBenedict XVI andFrancis.
