TheCatholic Church in Barbados is part of the worldwideCatholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of thePope inRome. At first, Catholicism had difficulty establishing itself inBarbados, which early in its colonial history was primarilyProtestant, but with the abolition ofslavery there in 1838, it began to take root. Currently, Catholics comprise about 4% of churchgoing Barbadians under theDiocese of Bridgetown.[1]
