Catherine McKinnon (born May 14, 1944)[1] is a Canadian actress andfolk/pop singer.
Born inSaint John, New Brunswick, McKinnon began as a child performer, making her debut radio broadcast at age eight and her television appearance at age 12.[2] She subsequently studied music atMount Saint Vincent University inHalifax.
In the 1960s she was a regular onCBC radio and television, including the Halifax based CBC television programSingalong Jubilee. In 1964, she popularized the song "Farewell to Nova Scotia" when she used it as the theme song for theSingalong Jubilee.[3]
McKinnon's first and biggest selling album,Voice of an Angel, was a collection of folk material, but she has also recorded ballads, torch songs, and songs by notable pop songwriters such asLeonard Cohen,Joni Mitchell,Gordon Lightfoot andBuffy Sainte-Marie. She has also been a stage actress, appearing in Canadian productions ofTurvey,The Wizard of Oz, andMy Fair Lady.
McKinnon married actor and comedianDon Harron in 1969; the couple divorced in 2003.[4]
Her sister, Patrician Anne McKinnon, began her singing career onCBC Television at age 13 and had a Canadian hit single entitled "Blue Lipstick" in 1965. "Blue Lipstick" was written especially for her by American composerP. F. Sloan, who also wrote forTerry Black. She was featured on bothVoice of an Angel albums. Patrician Anne's career was often interrupted owing toHodgkin's disease which caused her death at the age of 53 of lymphatic cancer on October 10, 2001 inToronto,Ontario, Canada.[5]
