Cathedral City is a brand ofCheddar cheese which is manufactured bySaputo Dairy UK inCornwall in the United Kingdom. Cathedral City's brand and logo is based onWells Cathedral inSomerset.[1]

History

The original owners of the brand, Mendip Foods, were based in thecathedral city ofWells in Somerset. Dairy Crest bought the brand from Mendip Foods Ltd in July 1995,[2][3] moving production toDavidstow inCornwall, which has neithercity status nor acathedral.[4]

In 2019,Saputo bought Dairy Crest.[5][6]

As of February 2026, the cheese is manufactured atDavidstow Creamery and matured at the distribution centre atNuneaton.

The brand was officially launched in Canada and the United States in 2020.[7][8][9]

Health research

In 2014, Cathedral City was cited in research published by theBritish Medical Journal highlighting the fact that branded cheeses generally had higher salt content than supermarket own-brands.[10]

YouGov’s BrandIndex ranks Cathedral City the most popular brand in the Chilled/Frozen, Packaged Foods sector in Great Britain.[11]
