Articles relating to theRed Summer (1919), a period during whichwhite supremacist terrorism andracial riots occurred in more than three dozen cities across theUnited States, and in one rural county inArkansas. The term "Red Summer" was coined bycivil rights activist and authorJames Weldon Johnson, who had been employed as afield secretary by theNational Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1916. In 1919, he organizedpeaceful protests against theracial violence.
